How often should you replace a pillowcase?

If you've never wondered how often you should replace your pillowcase , we can't really blame you. You probably associate your pillowcases and the pillow itself with comfort and sleep rather than laundry. Unfortunately, if you don't replace your pillowcases often enough, you could be putting your BedPeace at risk. Replace your pillowcase at least once a week for comfort, hygiene and health.

Why do you need to replace your pillowcase?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), we humans lose between 30,000 and 40,000 skin cells every day. If you sleep for at least seven hours, you shed a lot of those skin cells onto your sheets and pillows. Plus, sweat, oil from your skin, and good old-fashioned drool all end up on your pillowcases, especially if you don't wash your face before going to bed. You can even get allergens (such as pollen) into your bed through your hair. And let's not forget the skin cells, sweat, oil and drool of your partner and/or pet.

All those cells and body fluids can grow microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. This probably won't have a significant impact on your health, but it can lead to skin irritation, breakouts and possibly even infections.

The best and easiest way to prevent possible skin problems? Wash or replace your pillowcases and any allergy covers regularly. Preferably wash them once a week. If you drool a lot or have a habit of going to bed with makeup on, you may want to wash or replace the pillowcase more often. If you wash your face every night and take a shower before going to bed, your pillowcases will also stay clean longer.

What about the pillows themselves?

The National Sleep Foundation recommends washing pillows every six months with hot water and a mild detergent. In general, down/feather pillows and alternative pillows can be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle, while most foam pillows should not be machine washed. Some cushions are best cleaned dry. Read the manufacturer's instructions for your specific pillow.

There's no better feeling than sinking your head into a lovely pillow at the end of a long day. Sleep is priceless and quality pillows play an important role in achieving a good night's sleep. If you notice that your pillows are losing their shape, it may be time to replace them. Even if you wash your pillowcases and the pillows themselves regularly, it is recommended to replace your pillows every one to two years for reasons of comfort, hygiene and health. A good pillowcase and possibly an extra allergy cover can slow down this process.
